sorry but I am officially a joel miller apologist. the fireflies knock him out & as soon as he regains consciousness marlene breaks the news to him that ‘yah sorry you’re never going to see your daughter again bc the surgery is lethal. but here’s her knife as a keep sake <3′ i’m sorry marlene but u thought that was going to go over well? you thought the insanely dangerous and firearm proficient man was who obviously bonded to ellie was going to go calmly? she should have sent ten men to escort him out. thirty. she should have just shot him in the head while he was unconscious. but of course she underestimated how much he cared. what he would do for ellie. bc she knew mean gruff self serving survivalist joel not father joel. she didn’t even let joel and ellie say goodbye to each other. was planning on killing ellie without even telling her for an experimental procedure they had no proof would work. didn’t even give joel the option to see her one last time. “would u kill 1 person to save 100?” they didn’t even allow a fourteen year old the agency to answer that question. team joel

best thing i ever accepted about people is that most people are just kind of gross like, physically

like most people have gross little bad habits and let the laundry go a little too long and sweat in weird places and are messy eaters and have weird laughs and are a little greasy and asymettrical and have stains and tears and wear on the things they own and its like literally fine and human. we dont need to worry about that stuff and frankly we should kill whoever is responsible for making us think humans are even capable of being perfectly polished made up hygeine machines 24/7. we are little animals we came from the dirt and sometimes you scratch your buttcrack or pick at scabs or what the fuck ever it is literally normal animal behaviour !!! let the soft animal of your body ect ect nd sometimes the soft animal of your body is a little yucky.

Random, but a really handy way to make things seem creepy or wrong in horror is to make them incongruously neat or clean:

    • In the middle of a horrific battlefield, you find one corpse laid aside neatly, straightened and arranged, its arms crossed neatly across its chest
    • As you walk through the garden, you gradually realise that the oddness you’ve been noticing about the trees is that they are all perfectly symmetrical
    • As you move through the abandoned house, you realise that suddenly that there’s no dust in this room, no dirt or cobwebs
    • You hear hideous noises coming from behind a locked door, screams and pleas, and visceral sounds of violence. When you manage to break down the door, there is no one there, and the room is perfectly spotless
    • In the middle of a horrific battlefield, a hollow full of churned mud and blood, you find five corpses cleanly dismembered, each set of limbs or parts neatly laid out in their own little row
    • You witness a murder, a brutal, grisly killing that carpets the area in blood. When you return in a blind panic with the authorities, the scene is completely clean, and no amount of examination can find even a drop of blood
    • You run through the night and the woods with a comrade, pulling each other through leaves and twigs and mud as you scramble desperately towards freedom. When you finally emerge from the forest, in the grey light of dawn, you turn to your companion in relief, and notice that their clothes are somehow perfectly clean
    • You hand a glass of water to your suspect, talking casually the whole while, and watch with satisfaction as they take it in their bare hand and take a drink. There’ll be a decent set of prints to run from that later. Except there isn’t. There are no prints at all. As if nothing ever touched the glass
    • You browse idly through your host’s catalogue, and stop, and pay much more attention, when you realise that several items on a dry list of acquisitions are ones you’ve seen before, and it slowly dawns on you that each neat little object and number in this neat little book are things that belong (belonged?) to people you know

Neatness, particularly incongruous neatness, neatness where you expect violence or imperfection or abandonment, or neatness that you belatedly realise was hiding violence, or neatness that is imposed over violence, is incredibly scary. Because neatness is not a natural thing. Neatness requires some active force to have come through and made it so. Neatness implies that the world around you is being arranged, maybe to hide things, to disguise things, to make you doubt your senses, or else simply according to something else’s desires. Neatness is active and artificial. Neatness puts things, maybe even people, into neat little boxes according to something else’s ideals, and that’s terrifying as well. Being objectified. Being asked to fit categories that you’re not sure you can fit, and wondering what will happen to the bits of you that don’t.

Neatness, essentially, says that something else is here. Neatness where there should be chaos says that either something came and changed things, or that what you’re seeing now or what you saw then is not real. Neatness alongside violence says that something came through here for whom violence did not mean the same thing as it does to you.

Neatness, in the right context, in the right place, can be very, very scary

    And fun

No they’re right actually and they should say it.

The lefts descent into obsession with identity politics means all these boys get from these spaces is essentially being told they’re inherently monstrous or will grow up to be so.

12 year old boys are not evil. They’re children. And they’re susceptible to manipulation from these fucks on the right who have sadly correctly identified that large swathes of the left will ignore and shun them. People turn to extremist factions when they feel ignored and dehumanised.

A 12 year old boy online isn’t going to be able to read the nuances in your uber ironic but not really actually ironic “all white men are inherently trash” hot takes. They’re going to take that at face value because they’re 12 and that’s what 12 year olds do. And they’re going to feel angry, rejected and judged by your words. And then fucks like Andrew Tate get to swoop in and tell them that you’re wrong and start the ball rolling on that indoctrination.

If you’re an adult leftist and you honestly think teenage boys possess the wherewithal to purposefully follow dangerous Misogynists like Andrew Tate in order to “preserve their own privilege long term” then I’m sorry to say you’re too far gone and I’d suggest logging off and actually trying to have a conversation with a kid who is vulnerable to the grooming of these uber misogynists and treat them as a human being instead of a reflection of an identity you’ve boxed them into.

You may tick more diversity boxes but you are still the adult. Start acting like it.

    Fascism sells a synthetic nostalgia.

As good a time as any to remind folks of the 14 properties of “ur-fascism” (described by Umberto Eco, who grew up in Italy under Mussolini, in his 1995 essay Ur-Fascism). Not all need be present for single regime to be fascist, but a Venn diagram of all fascist regimes will cover them all.

    1. CULT OF TRADITION. The old ways are best. The New is not worthwhile.
    2. REJECT MODERNISM The development of Western philosophy post-Enlightenment is seen as a descent into depravity. See also : Reject post-modernism, which is seen as an even greater descent into irrationality.
    3. ACTION FOR ACTION’S SAKE. Action is to be taken without reflection or introspection - that’s for weaklings and degenerates. Often seen in a derision of “intellectual elites”.
    4. DISAGREEMENT IS TREASON. Analytical criticism cannot be allowed. A pantomime of discourse may be allowed, but only within the accepted framework and only if reaching the foregone conclusion.
    5. FEAR OF DIFFERENCE. Outsiders are your enemy. Those who are different are evil and want to corrupt you and destroy all you hold dear.
    6. APPEAL TO A FRUSTRATED MIDDLE CLASS Capitalising on genuine frustrations by pointing them toward convenient scapegoats. Real concerns used a recruiting tools.
    7. OBSESSION WITH A PLOT. There is a conspiracy run by THEM. You are besieged by THEM. THEY are behind all your ills. THEY are working in the shadows to enslave and destroy you.
    8. THE ENEMY IS BOTH STRONG AND WEAK. When rhetorically convenient, THEY are all-powerful. When rhetorically convenient, THEY are feeble, stupid, weak. The rhetorical focus shifts regardless of self-contradiction, because all that matters is positioning the enemy where the speaker’s goal requires them to be at any given moment.
    9. PACIFISM IS THE ENEMY. LIFE IS ETERNAL WAR. There must always be an enemy to fight. When that enemy is defeated, another must be found. When they cannot be found, they must be created, even from within. There is always the promise of a Final Solution bringing Ultimate Triumph, but it can never be achieved.
    10. CONTEMPT FOR THE WEAK. Elitism disguised as populism. Everyone of US is superior to THEM, cockroaches and drains on society that they are. But people are sheep who require strong leaders, who are by their nature superior to others.
    11. EVERYONE IS TAUGHT TO BE THE HERO. A CULT OF DEATH. Where in myth the hero is exceptional, in fascism everyone must be the hero. They crave heroic death, the reward for heroic life. In seeking it, they send others to die. (See also: Militarism).
    12. MACHISMO. Disdain for women and femininity. Intolerance of non-standard sexuality and gender expression.
    13. SELECTIVE POPULISM. The People are viewed as a monolith with a single will, as interpreted (in reality, determined) by the leaders. Democratic institutions are viewed as illegitimate because they run counter to the narrative of the existence of a single Voice Of The People.
    14. NEWSPEAK. Vocabulary cannot expand. If anything, it must shrink. Variation and nuance in dialogue means variation and nuance in thought. This cannot be allowed. Therefore categories must be binary. Definitions are simple and limited. If it cannot be boiled down into snappy catchphrase it does not exist.

“oh fuck we might give the poors an advantage for once”

    Edit:

I sure hope everyone sees this

My version of this post is getting Hella reblogged

I didn’t do my due diligence and just added a comment not expecting it to go anywhere

It turns out the original tweet is an Irish satire page

I agree with your sentiments and I want landlords to suffer just as much as the rest but I didn’t mean to spread misinformation online

Please stop fighting in the comments about something that’s not quite true

It would suck but it would be interesting to imagine a society with industrial standards of living that only uses renewables (no fossil or nuclear) and regulates energy use with availability based on weather.

Lots of people have an app that tells them whether they need to come in to work or not. When its particularly sunny, everyone takes amphetamines and sprints through their jobs for 14 hours at a time to make up for cloudy day production losses. There have been some industrial incidents that don’t kill anyone but cost billions of dollars when power becomes unavailable causing liquid metal to solidify and ruin entire foundries.

The internet has dial-up speeds at night as most data centers go into power-saving mode. People predownload terrabytes of media they want to watch later.

Cities are extremely dense because elevators, ebikes, and subways are the only forms of transportation efficient enough. Since there are some ultra-tall skyscrapers, people can also take an elevator to the top and a zipline to some destinations miles away.

The handful of suburban and rural areas don’t have lawns because every square inch of arable land that isnt needed for food is used for coppicing fast-growing trees. No one has wood stoves tho, its processed in kilns to extract flammable hydrocarbon gases and and produce charcoal. People in remote areas use the charcoal for heating. Industries that need hydrocarbons (and remote vehicles/rescue aircraft that need liquid fuel) use woodgas and products from bioengineered kelps or other algaes.

Salmon are extinct because every stream and river has been dammed for hydropower. Dry valleys and high basins are similarly turned into reservoirs for pumped storage.
